This note provides an overview of the New Zealand privacy law regime. It covers the collection, use, disclosure and retention of personal information under the Privacy Act 2020, effective from 1 December 2020, repealing and replacing the Privacy Act 1993. It covers the application of the Privacy Act 2020 to agencies, the meaning of personal information, the 13 information privacy principles (IPPs), access to and correction of personal information, the notifiable privacy breach regime and the enforcement and regulation of privacy breaches. It also discusses proposals for further reform of New Zealand privacy laws.
