This note considers the legislative provisions allowing a formerly contracted-out occupational pension scheme that contains guaranteed minimum pensions (GMPs) to convert these to ordinary scheme benefits. The note also looks at the possible use of GMP conversion as a means of equalising benefits between the sexes to take account of the effect of unequal GMPs.
