Jackson Lewis: California Enacts Paid Sick Leave Law | Practical Law

This Law Firm Publication by Jackson Lewis P.C. discusses the enactment of California's Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB1522). The new Act, recently signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, requires employers to allow employees to accrue at least one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Employees are covered by the new Act if they work in California for at least 30 days in a year after July 1, 2015 and not subject to the limited exceptions carved out in the legislation. Accrued but unused sick leave carries over to the following year, but an employer may limit an employee's use of paid sick leave to 24 hours or three days per year. The Act, which is enforced by the Labor Commissioner, also protects employees from retaliation.
