An update on amendments to the Digital Economy Bill made by the government to enable the Bill to be enacted before the dissolution of Parliament.
The government has dropped two clauses from the Digital Economy Bill as part of an agreement with the opposition to enable the Bill to be enacted before Parliament is dissolved. The first clause (clause 1 in the Bill as published) would have given Ofcom a greater role in promoting investment in communications networks and in public-service media content, and the second (clause 29) would have given Ofcom the power to appoint and provide funding for independently financed news consortia to provide regional and local television news to replace the current ITV provider.
