Personal/carer's leave

Leave available to all national system employees. An entitlement to paid personal/carer’s leave is triggered when:
  • An employee is not fit for work because of personal illness or injury affecting the employee. In practice, this type of paid personal/carer’s leave is often referred to as "sick leave" or "personal leave".
  • An employee is providing care or support to a member of the employee’s immediate family or household who requires care or support due to a personal illness or unexpected emergency affecting the family or household member. In practice, this element of paid personal/carer’s leave is often referred to as "carer’s leave".
Employees other than casual employees are entitled to up to 10 days of paid personal/carer's leave for each year of service with an employer. Alternatively, casual employees are entitled up to two days of unpaid personal/carer's leave for each occasion of personal/carer's leave taken.
