The Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act (also called Chapter 93A or Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 93A) is an essential tool for business and consumer claimants. Chapter 93A prohibits conduct that involves an unfair method of competition or an unfair or deceptive act or practice in trade or commerce. It covers both business claims under Section 11 and consumer claims under Section 9 and reaches a broad range of conduct. Chapter 93A also provides more powerful remedies than many other causes of action under Massachusetts law, including attorneys' fees and, when a violation is willful or knowing, multiple damages (double or treble damages).
This Toolkit includes links to resources to help counsel litigate a Chapter 93A claim and understand its scope, application, procedure, and remedies.
