Department of Agriculture (USDA)

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for enforcing federal laws and developing policy on farming, food processing and supply, nutrition, natural resources conservation, and rural development. For example, the USDA:
  • Develops programs for enhancing economic opportunities for US farmers and ranchers.
  • Conducts safety and health inspections on meat and poultry products.
  • Protects public lands, such as forests, wilderness areas, and grasslands.
  • Supports rural community development initiatives.
  • Manages food assistance and educational programs.
