The process by which a defendant brings a third party into a lawsuit because the third party may be liable for all, or part, of the claim that the plaintiff has brought against the defendant. This process does not create substantive rights against third parties. Rather it is a procedural vehicle for asserting claims that the defendant has against the third party under applicable substantive law.
