US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)

An independent, volunteer panel of scientific experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine. Under the Affordable Care Act's (ACA's) preventive health services requirement, the USPSTF reviews and provides ratings for numerous evidence-based items or services. The USPSTF's recommendations are based on the panel's review and research regarding specific preventive services, including:
  • Screenings and behavioral counseling.
  • Preventive medications.
If an item or service receives a USPSTF rating of "A" or "B," health plans and insurers must provide coverage of the item or service to plan participants and beneficiaries without cost-sharing (see Practice Note, Preventive Health Services Under the ACA, Other Than Contraceptives: Covered Preventive Services).
Recent USPSTF recommendations have addressed:
  • Breast cancer medications.
  • Cognitive impairment in older adults.
  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for persons who are at high risk of acquiring HIV.
For more information on the USPSTF, see the panel's website.
