Rural Development Programme (RDP)

The programme of rural development schemes designed by each member state or region in the EU and co-funded by pillar 2 of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget.
The EU rural development objectives are:
  • Fostering the competitiveness of agriculture.
  • Ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources, and climate action.
  • Achieving a balanced territorial development of rural economies and communities including the creation and maintenance of employment.
Following the departure from the EU, the UK ceased to participate in the CAP.
The last Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) ran from 1 January 2015 and is now largely closed. Improvement projects with RDPE funding will continue to get money until they finish.
The Welsh equivalent, Glastir, is now closed for farming support. However, existing Glastir Advanced, Commons, and Organic contracts can be extended.
