The US Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has released a new version of its Guide to Privacy and Security of Electronic Health Information.
On April 13, 2015, the US Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published an updated version of its Guide to Privacy and Security of Electronic Health Information (Guide). ONC, which is located within the Office of the Secretary for the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is the principal federal entity charged with coordination of nationwide efforts to implement and use advanced health information technology and the electronic exchange of health information.
The Guide, which was last published in 2011, now includes practical information on heath information issues including:
  • Cybersecurity.
  • Patient access through Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT).
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology features available under the 2014 Edition Certification rule.
The Guide also incorporates new, practical examples of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules in action to help small and medium-sized provider practices, health, health IT and other information technology professionals understand how those rules may impact their businesses and the people they serve.
The Guide may also be useful to those seeking practical tips on privacy and data security and provides sample questions businesses may want to ask of heath IT providers to ensure that their privacy and security needs are met.
