A federal agency within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with the objective of making available health care to individuals in geographically isolated and economically or medically vulnerable communities. HRSA supports the training and distribution of health providers, and improvements in the delivery of health care.

HRSA is also responsible for developing recommendations and guidelines concerning evidence-informed, women's covered preventive health services for group health plans and health insurers under the Affordable Care Act's (ACA's) preventive services requirements, including contraceptive methods approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (see Practice Notes, Preventive Health Services Under the ACA, Other Than Contraceptives and Contraceptives Coverage Under the ACA, and Legal Update, HRSA Updates Women's Preventive Services Guidelines).

In March 2020, HRSA received $100 million in funding under Congressional legislation to support the federal government's prevention, preparation, and response efforts concerning COVID-19 (the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (2019 Novel Coronavirus)) (see Global Coronavirus Toolkit and Legal Update, President Signs Legislation to Fund Coronavirus Response; Health Insurers to Waive Co-Pays). The funding is for grants under the Health Centers Program.
