A Practice Note explaining how to electronically file (e-file) and serve court documents using the Case Management/Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) system in federal district court. Specifically, this Note outlines how to e-file court documents, including complaints and case-initiating documents, motion papers, under seal documents, and notices of appeal. It also explains how to handle e-filing difficulties and identifies post-filing best practices. This Note also addresses electronic service and when counsel must use an alternative method to serve documents they e-file using CM/ECF.
