Syria has enacted a new arbitration law which will apply to all contracts signed after 1 May 2008.
The new law is based on the Egyptian Arbitration Act and the UNCITRAL Model Law. However, it is understood that the law does not contain any new provisions governing the enforcement of foreign awards, which will remain subject to the rules governing the enforcement of foreign judgments, despite the fact that Syria became a signatory to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards in 1959.
