Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) (外交部)

The MFA's main functions include:
  • Implementing the state's diplomatic principles, policies and legislation, safeguarding national sovereignty, state security and interests and handling diplomatic affairs on behalf of the state and government between leaders of the Communist Party of China and other world leaders.
  • Studying strategy and issues concerning international relations. Analysing major issues in relation to diplomatic relations and co-ordinating government departments in relation to diplomatic planning. Drafting legislation related to diplomatic strategy.
  • Handling global and regional security, political, economic, human rights, social, refugee and other diplomatic affairs in the United Nations and other multilateral forums.
  • Dealing with matters in international arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. Researching international security issues, and organising negotiations on treaties and agreements related to arms control.
  • Concluding bilateral and multilateral treaties, handling international judicial co-operation, overseeing or participating in dealing with major foreign-related legal cases that involve the state or the government. Assisting in examining foreign-related draft laws and regulations, and organising and co-ordinating the work of fulfilling international conventions and agreements.
