China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (Shanghai FTZ) (中国(上海)自由贸易试验区)

An experimental free trade zone located in the Shanghai municipality of China. Inside the Shanghai FTZ, some aspects of China's national legal and regulatory regime are varied for an initial trial period, after which they will be rolled out nationwide or terminated.
The Shanghai FTZ originally comprised the following four special customs regulation zones covering 28.78 square kilometres:
  • Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (上海外高桥保税区).
  • Shanghai Waigaoqiao Bonded Logistics Park (上海外高桥保税物流园区).
  • Yangshan Bonded Port (洋山保税港区).
  • Shanghai Pudong Airport Free Trade Zone (上海浦东机场综合保税区).
The Shanghai FTZ was expanded in 2014 to include the following:
  • Lujiazui Finance Zone (陆家嘴金融片区) covering 34.26 square kilometres.
  • Jinqiao Development Zone (金桥开发片区) covering 20.48 square kilometres.
  • Zhangjiang Hi-tech Zone (张江高科技片区) covering 37.2 square kilometres.
The geographical extent of the Shanghai FTZ was further expanded in 2019 to include Lingang New Area (临港新片区), referring to the area locating to the south of the Dazhi River (大治河) and to the east of the Jinhui Port (金汇港) as well as in Xiao Yangshan Island (小洋山岛) and the southern section of Pudong International Airport:
The Lingang New Area will be developed in phases with an area of 119.5 square kilometres having been identified as the first phase.
The further expansion of the zone in 2019 was made under the Approval Reply from the State Council on the Establishment of Lingang New Area of the Shanghai FTZ 2019 (国务院关于同意设立中国(上海)自由贸易试验区临港新片区的批复).
