National People's Congress (NPC) (全国人民代表大会(全国人大))

The highest organ of Chinese state power. It is elected for a term of five years and must meet in session once a year. Among other powers, the Constitution gives the NPC power to:
  • Amend the Constitution.
  • Supervise the Constitution's enforcement.
  • Enact and amend basic laws.
  • Elect, appoint and remove top officials including China's president, the premier of the State Council and the president of the Supreme People's Court.
  • Approve the state budget, plans for national economic and social development, and reports on the implementation of those plans.
  • Alter or annul decisions by the NPC Standing Committee.
  • Make decisions on questions of war and peace.
  • Organise inquiries into government organs and activities.
