The Government and Environment Agency are consulting on a revised strategy, and related guidance, on the discharge of radioactive substances. The consultations close on 30 September 2008.
The revised strategy, which will cover the period 2006-2030, will replace the current radioactive discharge strategy and will apply to both liquid and aerial discharges from nuclear and non-nuclear installations in the UK (including nuclear defence activities).
The consultations will be relevant to anyone authorised to discharge radioactive substances under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (including nuclear licensed sites, the medical sector, pharmaceutical companies, universities and the oil and gas sector), as well as anyone considering building a new nuclear power plant.
NOTE ADDED: The Department of Energy and Climate Change published the Strategy for Radioactive Discharges (the Strategy) in July 2009, and published statutory guidance to the Environment Agency on implementation of the Strategy in November 2009.
