Local Law Coverage in Labor & Employment Resources

Proliferation of Local Employment Laws
City and county governments are legislating in the employment law space with increasing frequency by providing greater employee rights and protections than those under federal or state law. Local employment laws address topics such as higher minimum wage and paid sick leave requirements, tip credit and fair workweek restrictions, salary and criminal history bans, and more.
Local Employment Law Coverage
Generally, where state and local law is addressed, Practical Law's Labor & Employment resources cover, at minimum, the following core local jurisdictions:
  • Chicago, IL and Cook County, IL
  • Los Angeles, CA (city and county)
  • Minneapolis, MN and St. Paul, MN
  • New York City, NY
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Portland, OR
  • San Francisco, CA (consolidated city and county)
  • Seattle, WA
If a resource covers local law, any core local jurisdiction with an applicable law in effect will be included in that resource.
This list of core local jurisdictions is based on a city or county's activity in legislating local employment laws, which may not always coincide with other criteria such as population or industry. Practical Law's Labor & Employment team will add newly active core jurisdictions as warranted.
While exhaustive city and county coverage is not always practicable, the Labor & Employment team is committed to covering local law developments as broadly as possible. Therefore, several of our state resources and multi-state charts include local employment laws beyond these core jurisdictions. For a list of our multi-state charts, including those that also cover local laws, see Multi-State Charts Toolkit.
