The US Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force announced that it will host a public meeting to promote constructive, cross-industry dialogue among stakeholders about ways to facilitate a more robust and collaborative digital marketplace for copyrighted works.
On November 21, 2016, the US Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force announced a public meeting on December 9, 2016 to promote constructive, cross-industry dialogue among stakeholders about ways to facilitate a more robust and collaborative digital marketplace for copyrighted works. (81 Fed. Reg. 83228-01 (Nov. 21, 2016)). The meeting will focus specifically on:
  • Initiatives to take the digital content marketplace forward with a focus on standards, interoperability, and digital registries and database initiatives to track ownership and usage rights.
  • Innovative technologies designed to improve the ways consumers can access and use different types of digital content.
  • Ways that different sectors can collaborate to build a more robust and interconnected digital marketplace.
  • The government's role in facilitating such initiatives and technological development.
The meeting is part of an ongoing initiative of the Task Force to explore the Federal Government's role in ensuring balanced and meaningful protection for intellectual property while promoting innovation in the digital economy, which included:
  • The release of its Green Paper on Copyright Policy, Creativity, and Innovation in the Digital Economy in July 2013.
  • An initial public meeting on issues related to access to rights information and online licensing transactions in December 2013.
  • A subsequent public meeting on the online licensing environment for copyrighted works in April 2015.
