Personal data protection in the EU: European Commission adopts reform package | Practical Law

The European Commission, on 25 January 2012, adopted a comprehensive reform to update and modernise the principles enshrined in the 1995 Data Protection Directive to guarantee privacy rights. The package, amongst other things, comprises a Regulation setting out a general EU framework for data protection and a Directive on protecting personal data processed for the purposes of prevention, detection, investigation or prosecution of criminal offences and related judicial activities.
