A unique 13 digit number that is available to all New Zealand businesses, including companies, sole traders, partnerships and trusts. Having a NZBN is currently optional. A NZBN links to information about a business, such as its trading name and contact details, which is recorded on the NZBN Register.

From 12 May 2020, businesses that are organised into parts are able to choose to have a unique identifying number assigned to a part (or parts) of the business.

From 12 May 2021, a Māori business can identify itself as such on the NZBN register.
