National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)

A non-profit association comprised of the lead insurance regulators of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The NAIC assists state insurance commissioners in regulating the insurance industry by setting standards and best practices, including uniform rules for regulating multistate insurers.
The NAIC represents the collective views of state regulators and provides input on the development of federal regulations affecting the insurance industry—including insured health plan arrangements. For example, the NAIC was instrumental in developing guidance and standards for summaries of benefits and coverage (SBCs) and external review under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) (see Practice Note, Summaries of Benefits and Coverage Under the ACA). Among other initiatives, the NAIC writes and adopts model laws, including the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Uniform Model Act.
