Geologic Formation (US)
A segment or unit of rock that shares similar physical characteristics (such as color, composition, size of particles, or crystals) making it unique enough in appearance to differentiate it from the surrounding rock layers. Geologic formations are mapped and studied by geologists to identify rocks where minerals may be deposited.
