The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is amending its regulations to reduce certain trademark application and renewal fees.
On December 10, 2014 the USPTO issued a final rule amending its regulations to reduce fees for:
  • Trademark applications.
  • Trademark registration renewals.
  • Requests to transform an extension of trademark protection to the US into a US application.
Under the new rules, the USPTO will:
  • Create a new Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS) Reduced Fee application. If an applicant authorizes e-mail communication and agrees to file all responses and other specified documents electronically during the prosecution of the application, the fees for the following are reduced by $50, from $325 to $275 per class:
    • an application filed using the TEAS application form; and
    • a TEAS request to transform an extension of trademark protection to the US into a US application.
  • Reduce the fee for a TEAS Plus application by $50, from $275 to $225 per class.
  • Reduce the fee for a TEAS application for renewal of a registration by $100, from $400 to $300 per class.
The new rules take effect on January 17, 2015.
