The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the designation of Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months.
On March 3, 2022, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it has designated Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
TPS may be designated for a country when its conditions meet at least one of the following statutory bases for designation:
  • Ongoing armed conflict.
  • Environmental disasters.
  • Extraordinary and temporary conditions.
The US has designated TPS for Ukraine because Russia's recent military invasion of Ukraine has prevented Ukrainian nationals from returning home and placed the country into "ongoing armed conflict" and "extraordinary and temporary conditions."
Individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the US since March 1, 2022 or earlier. The designation will last for a period of 18 months. Individuals applying for TPS may also apply for an employment authorization document (EAD) that permits employment in the US for the duration of the individual's TPS status.
For more on TPS generally, see USCIS: Temporary Protected Status.
