Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) (生态环境部)

A central government ministry sitting under the State Council in charge of environmental protection administration in China.
The MEE's major functions include:
  • Formulating and implementing eco-environmental policies, plans and standards.
  • Monitoring environmental protection activities and performing enforcement duties.
  • Supervising and managing pollution prevention, nuclear and radiation safety.
  • Organising central environmental protection inspections.
(See MEE website.)
The MEE was established in April 2018 by consolidating environmental protection administration functions previously split among several agencies (see Practice note, Understanding the 2018 government institutional reform: China: Ministry of Ecological Environment).
