Privacy and data protection obligations in the US arise from a patchwork of federal laws, state laws, regulations, and self-regulatory codes of conduct. States have often taken a leading role in protecting their residents' personal information, for example, establishing notification requirements when a data breach involving protected personal information occurs. While similarities among these state laws exist, there are also many differences that make nationwide compliance challenging.
This Toolkit provides many resources to help counsel understand and comply with state privacy and data protection laws, including state-specific resources and charts that compare similar state laws.
