US Forest Service (USFS)

A US federal agency within the Department of Agriculture with jurisdiction over national forests and grasslands. USFS's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of US forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. USFS:
  • Manages national forests and grasslands for multiple sustained uses, including:
    • protection and restoration of ecosystems and biological diversity;
    • public access and recreation; and
    • natural resource development.
  • Performs fire and invasive species management.
  • Conducts research on forestry, rangeland management, and forest resource utilization.
  • Assists state and local governments, forest industries, and landowners in protecting and managing non-federal forest and associated range and watershed lands.
USFS reviews proposed oil and gas development on USFS-managed lands in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
