Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

A federal agency that regulates and monitors civil aviation in the United States, operating as a component of the US Department of Transportation (DOT). The primary responsibilities of the FAA are to:
  • Promulgate and enforce regulations for all aspects of aircraft safety.
  • Register and record rights in aircraft.
  • Develop and maintain and systems and mechanisms necessary for safe and efficient air travel.
  • Control and manage federal aids to aeronautic aviation.
  • Develop air traffic regulations.
  • Administer all air traffic controls, including both civil and military, within US airspace.
  • Provide grants to develop public-use airports.
  • Promote civil aviation abroad by providing technical assistance to foreign governments.
  • Promulgate and enforce regulations on all safety matters that relate to commercial launch activities.
