Initial Coin Offering (ICO)
A fundraising mechanism used for startup blockchain and cryptocurrency ventures. An ICO is similar to an initial public offering (IPO), however, in an ICO, investors purchase virtual currency tokens instead of equity shares. ICOs were sometimes used by startups to avoid the SEC's strictly regulated capital-raising process, however, the SEC began to scrutinize and take enforcement action against ICOs around 2018. As a result, their popularity has waned.
