Nice Classification

Also known as the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks. A classification that categorizes goods and services for purposes of trademark and service mark registration into 45 classes:
  • 34 classes of goods.
  • 11 classes of services.
The classification headings, which broadly describe the goods or services in each class, are accompanied by an alphabetical listing of the specific goods or services contained within the class.
The Nice Classification simplifies the trademark application process by ensuring that the goods and services covered by an application are classified in the same manner in all trademark offices adhering to the classification. The classification was established by the Nice Agreement, a 1957 treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Approximately 150 trademark offices worldwide use the classification, including the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The classification is updated and revised regularly by a committee of experts who represent all of the parties to the Nice Agreement. The twelfth edition took effect on January 1, 2023. A revised version of the twelfth edition is in effect.
More information, including the complete Nice Classification, is available on the WIPO website.
