Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

An internationally-recognized green building rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in March 2000 that provides a framework for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of high performance buildings. The rating system provides checklists for various types of commercial and residential building projects, including new construction or existing buildings. Certification levels are assigned based on points earned from items on each checklist.
See also the USGBC's LEED website for more information on the ratings system.
