Glossary

Medicaid

A government program that provides certain low-income individuals and families with health care services. Depending on the rules of the specific state administering the program, the recipient may be required to pay a small portion of the cost of certain services provided.
Specific eligibility requirements for Medicaid vary on a state-by-state basis and can be based on:
  • Age.
  • Whether an individual is pregnant, disabled, or blind.
  • US citizenship or residency status.
  • An individual's resources (for example, bank accounts, real property, and other possessions that can be sold).
In March 2020, the federal government issued guidance for Medicaid agencies in response to the outbreak of COVID-19, the disease cause by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (see Global Coronavirus Toolkit).
