National Health Commission (NHC) (国家卫生健康委员会)

A central government commission sitting under the State Council.
The NHC's major functions include:
  • Formulating national health policies.
  • Co-ordinating and advancing medical and healthcare reforms.
  • Establishing a national basic medicine system.
  • Supervising and administrating public health, medicare and health emergencies.
  • Managing family planning services.
  • Drawing up policies and measures to cope with an aging population and incorporating medicare with old-age care.
  • Assuming management of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (国家中医药管理局), which is responsible for the regulation of the traditional Chinese medicines.

The NHC was established in March 2018 by replacing the dismantled National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) (国家卫生和计划生育委员会) (see Practice note, Understanding the 2018 government institutional reform: China: National Health Commission).
