State secrets (国家秘密)

Under Article 9 of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Guarding State Secrets 2010, information in the following seven broad categories may constitute a state secret, if divulgence of these matters is likely to prejudice state security and national interests, subject to the restrictions in place (such as classification rules).
  • Key decisions on national affairs.
  • National defence and military action.
  • Diplomatic activities and international confidentiality obligations undertaken by the state.
  • National economic and social developments.
  • Science and technology.
  • National security and criminal investigations.
  • Other matters designated by the national state secrecy authorities.
