Glossary

Operating system.

The basic computer program that is necessary to run a particular computer system and which, for example, schedules the work being done, provides a log or allocates space and equipment such as terminals and printers. Some of the operating software is, in fact, encoded into the hardware (as firmware) and the term “operating system” normally refers to the part which is not. Unix and Microsoft Windows are examples of operating systems.
