Protected rights
Until 6 April 2012, the part a member's pension rights in a
contracted-out money purchase (COMP) scheme
or an
appropriate personal pension (APP) scheme
that derived from rebates the member's employer and the member received on their
national insurance contributions (NICs)
were subject to special rules and known as "protected rights". The rules and restrictions relating to former protected rights were abolished on 6 April 2012.
