A person who starts legal proceedings. This person then becomes “a party” to the proceedings. (In the context of divorce proceedings issued before 6 April 2022, the applicant is referred to as the petitioner.) Once papers are sent to the other person(s) named in the application as the respondent (or their lawyer), they are referred to as the respondent (to the application).
