Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) was approved in 1977 as Title VIII of the Consumer Credit Protection Act. The FDCPA prohibits entities from engaging in abusive practices in the collection of consumer debts. The law also requires debt collectors to adhere to time and place restrictions and provide consumers with a method for disputing and obtaining validation of debt information.
