Produced Water (US)

In the oil and gas industry, a waste stream produced with the hydrocarbons from a well. It consists of saltwater from underground formations and other liquid wastes, often including used hydraulic fracturing (fracking or fracing) fluids.
Produced water volumes have increased in many oil and gas-producing regions because of the widespread use of fracing. Oil and gas operators commonly dispose of produced water by injecting it into disposal wells but sometimes recycle it or use it in secondary recovery operations.
