An independent supervisory authority responsible for monitoring the processing of personal data by EU institutions and bodies, and for reviewing EU legislative developments that have an impact on the protection of personal data. Part of its role is to advise EU institutions and bodies on all matters relating to the protection of personal data, and especially on legislative proposals which have an impact on data protection.

The EDPS is governed by the Institutions Data Protection Regulation ((EU) 2018/1725).
