This Practice Note provides an overview of the exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that allow agencies to deny a records request. Specifically, this Note summarizes the types of records and information covered by each of FOIA's nine exemptions. This Note also briefly summarizes the conditions under which agencies are considered to have waived the ability to withhold information under an exemption.
