A Practice Note describing the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees covered by California's Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act, also known as the California Paid Sick Leave Law, as amended by S.B. 616, which takes effect on January 1, 2024. This Note provides best practices for employers managing paid sick leave and discusses related obligations under the state's Kin Care Leave law (Cal. Lab. Code § 233), California Family Rights Act (CFRA), Pregnancy Disability Leave Law (PDLL), Paid Family Leave (PFL), as well as under the federal Family and Medical Rights Act (FMLA). It also addresses certain relevant law in key local jurisdictions. Other local laws may impose additional or different requirements.
