The US Copyright Office released the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, Third Edition. The Third Edition represents a comprehensive overhaul, and is intended to make the Copyright Office's standards and practices more accessible and transparent to the public.
On December 22, 2014, the US Copyright Office published an announcement of the release of the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, Third Edition (Compendium).
The Compendium is intended to be a technical manual for Copyright Office staff and a guidebook for others, including copyright practitioners. The Third Edition is a comprehensive overhaul. It discusses:
  • Fundamental principles of copyright law such as creation, publication, registration and renewal.
  • Routine issues such as filing applications and requesting copies of records.
  • Recent changes to recordation practices, including submitting titles and registration numbers in electronic form.
The Compendium also contains a new Table of Authorities listing:
  • The case law, statutes, and other legal authorities cited in it.
  • The relevant section where each citation is found.
The Third Edition is effective as of December 22, 2014.
