Security

This term has a number of meanings. In the context of:
  • Finance, property given, deposited, or pledged to secure the fulfillment of an obligation, usually the repayment of a debt. In a secured loan financing, the borrower will grant a security interest in collateral as security for the performance of its obligations and the payment of its loan under a loan agreement.
  • Securities, an instrument that represents ownership (equity securities), a creditor relationship (debt obligation), or other right to ownership (option). Canadian securities laws (such as Ontario Securities Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. S.5, section 1(1)) which define securities to be of an enumerated list of financial products. There are similar definitions under other Applicable Securities Laws in Canada.
