Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)

A group of medical and public health experts within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that develops recommendations regarding vaccines for use in the US civilian population. The CDC sets US adult and childhood immunization schedules based on the ACIP's recommendations. The ACIP was established under Section 222 of the Public Health Service Act (PHSA) (42 U.S.C. § 217a).
The ACIP has been instrumental in the federal government's response to the US outbreak of COVID-19, the disease that results from SARS-CoV-2. For example, the ACIP made recommendations concerning the scope of "qualifying coronavirus preventive services" that group health plans and health insurers must cover without cost-sharing during the COVID-19 public health emergency. In December 2020, the ACIP also helped determine which population groups would be given priority for receiving COVID-19 vaccines.
For more information on the ACIP, see the CDC website.
