National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) (国家广播电视总局)

A government organ sitting under the State Council.
The NRTA's major functions include:
  • Implementing the CPC's propaganda principles and policies.
  • Drafting policies and measures for radio and television management and ensuring their implementation.
  • Co-ordinating the development and promoting the reform of broadcasting.
  • Supervising, managing and reviewing the content and quality of radio, television and internet audio-visual programmes.
  • Managing the importation of radio and television programmes.
  • Facilitating the internationalisation of the radio and television industries.
(See NRTA website.)
The NRTA was established in April 2018 by taking over the functions of radio and television administration from the dismantled State Administration of Press, Publications, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) (see Practice note, Understanding the 2018 government institutional reform: China: Propaganda and media).
