Bankruptcy Code

The informal name for the body of federal bankruptcy law, embodied in Title 11 of the United States Code (11 U.S.C. §§ 101 to 1532). Title 11 is subdivided into 15 chapters, six of which have been repealed, leaving in effect:

Chapter 1: General provisions (§§ 101 to 112, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 3: Case administration (§§ 301 to 366, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 5: Creditors, the debtor, and the estate (§§ 501 to 562, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 7: Liquidation (§§ 701 to 784, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 9: Adjustment of debts of a municipality (§§ 901 to 946, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 11: Reorganization (§§ 1101 to 1174, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 12: Adjustment of debts of a family farmer or fisherman with regular annual income (§§ 1201 to 1231, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 13: Adjustment of debts of an individual with regular income (§§ 1301 to 1330, Bankruptcy Code).
Chapter 15: Ancillary and other cross-border cases (§§ 1501 to 1532, Bankruptcy Code).
