The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has expanded the list of basic medical supplies authorized for export or reexport to Iran under an existing general license. OFAC has also clarified the available export and financing mechanisms for humanitarian goods in international trade.
On July 25, 2013, the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued a press release announcing that OFAC has:
  • Expanded the list of basic medical supplies authorized for export or reexport to Iran under an existing general license without prior OFAC approval.
  • Issued further guidance on existing broad authorizations and exceptions applicable to the sale of food, agricultural commodities, medicine and medical devices by non-US persons to Iran.
OFAC expanded the list of basic medical supplies to include a broad range of medical items, such as:
  • Electrocardiography machines (EKGs).
  • Electroencephalography machines (EEGs).
  • Dialysis machines.
  • Other types of equipment used by hospitals and medical facilities in Iran.
OFAC took these actions to ensure that US sanctions against Iran do not impede legitimate humanitarian trade.
